WELLNESS CHRONICLES, PEA PROTEIN

I wanted to share one of my secrets in this plant-based lifestyle that I live that will help you keep your protein intake up and your stomach filled throughout the day and that is a pea protein made from yellow peas by NOW Sports. This product is only made with pure non-gmo pea protein isolate from yellow peas (pisum sativum) in powder form. This brand's version of pea protein is easily digested due to the "thermic"effect it has (TEF: Thermic Effect of Food), with a smooth texture, and superior taste.  It is also allergy friendly; free of soy free and it is non dairy. The unflavored one is free of artificial sweeteners, artificial colors. It is great for Plant-based people like myself, vegans, vegetarians, macrobioticists, & raw foodists. (SN: There is a difference in being plant-based and being vegan; links below).

This is 1 leveled scoop pea protein equivalent to 24 g of protein

I use the Non-GMO version that is pure vegetable protein that has 24 grams per scoop which is the serving size of 1 scoop leveled that also contains 120 calories per scoop. There is a organic version of the pea protein also, however, I've come to learn that peas are highly sprayed with pesticides, so, I choose to use the non-gmo version instead that is unflavored because I can add my own flavoring to it to the tasting that I prefer. There is a misconception that many people have about organic foods and and it not being sprayed with pesticides which is totally false. It is not all organic foods, but, certain ones are sprayed with pesticides. It also depends on the farm it is grown on too and it's standards in farming with crops. So how is it organic if pesticides are being used for certain crops grown? I will leave that as a, "Food For Thought."

Yellow pea protein amino acids are also great for those whose bodies have issues absorbing nutrients and also for those with specific type of eating habits or "diets;" I really don't using the word diet so I will say lifestyle instead. It is great for the immune by giving it a boost, along with producing more of an antioxidant activity that will help oxygenate the blood cells. It works well with the central nervous system by aiding in its development and it also help combats fat build up. Yellow pea protein powder helps with hypertension and kidney disease. Kidney disease usually leads up to cardiovascular problems. Kidney disease can cause one to not urinate as much as they need to because there is a decrease in urine flow and that will make the toxins stay in the blood, body and keeps a key protein in the kidney that needs to be passed through.

The pea protein is also packed with amino acids that has 33 grams of amino acids per serving. Amino acids are known as the "building blocks," of protein because they are the chemical units necessary to make protein in the body, a great source of energy, and helps with the make up of all tissues and materials in the body which includes the in the helping of your flesh (muscle building and recovery), bones, skin, nails, RNA/DNA, hormones. This happens, especially, from the consumption of the yellow split pea protein that is isolate powder that is activated in enzymes. You will not have he same affect or health benefits by just eating yellow split peas in soup alone. Yellow split peas by itself does not have the high protein intake as it would when it is isolated; it will bound more to carbohydrates. When amino acids are combined with nitrogen they produced thousands of proteins in the body, but, not all are chemically formed, however, they become the end result of protein digestion. Your cells uses the amino acids to build each cell and what specific type of protein that each cell needs to help them function.

NOW Sports pea protein, has the 9 essential amino acids per serving : L-Histine (590), L-Isoleucine (1094), L-Luecine (2009), L-Lysine (1790), L-Methionine (211), L-Phenylalanine, L-Threonine (936), L-Tryptophan (211), L-Valine (1183). Non-essential amino acids (same grams per servings as listed above): L-Alanine (974), L-Arginine (2030), L-Aspartic Acid (4286), Glycine (1042), L-Serine (1248), L-Tyrosine (895). (SN: some of these amino acids are branched chained and some of the non essential amino acids can be turned into essential ones also).

Protein is necessary for the red blood cells to build, healthy weight, muscle mass (not a complete list). My son uses it more as an after work out regimen and it does wonders for him. I myself use it at least 3 times a week also when I do work out,and sometimes as a in between meal to make sure I am getting enough protein throughout the week, due, to my high metabolism. I make sure to eat more energy cell foods.

Raw Bee Pollen from Buzzn Bee who is a local vendor here in FL

Bee pollen is a complete food

The pea protein mixes, well, but I prefer to have it mixed in our Ninja blender with Hemp Protein, due, to the high benefits of the combination. Many times I consume this with super foods, such as: raw cacao (cocoa) powder, bee pollen (it is not the same as allergy causing pollen), or organic chlorella powder from NOW Food brand, almond milk, and a sweetener such as brown sugar, plant-based "BEE FREE HONEE," brand that is made from apples, agave, or maple syrup. I will add, that spirulina can also be used also. It is used to save those who are malnutrition in third world countries because it is the "perfect and complete food." Also, spirulina is older than chlorella, they are both in the "millions" age range of algae, but, they have two similar, yet, different functions. (links below)

UPDATE: (Options: you can add a banana, oats (soak them first), or both to mixture above and remember to increase the liquid if you do by at least a half cup. I highly suggest you use high speed type blender such as a Ninja, Nutri Bullet, Vitamix, etc., instead of the regular ones. They will extract the nutrients from the ingredients way better and will make them even more easier for your body to absorb).

This brand & Nutiva's Organic Hemp Protein is what I use

The pea protein is a supplement, so, it can be used as an in between meal or snack. If you love making smoothies; I highly recommend it to add into them also. Just remember to add in a dark green leafy vegetable such as kale, or spinach as examples with it to help give it a higher fiber boost since it is not the green pea powder and the yellow one instead  it has 35% iron (blood builder), that can harden your stool, especially, if there isn't enough fiber in your intake of foods. The high fiber is necessary to remove all toxins out of the bloodstream, gives you clear skin, and aids in fighting against dis-eases that are caused by inflammation in the blood, due, the lack of oxygen. That is why being regular with bowel movements, "daily," is imperative to optimum health which will aid in your life's longevity. You want to have at least 2 bowel movements a day for be "regular". Some have more bowels movements that are between 3-4 times daily that keeps their blood even more clearer of toxins when done correctly that will aid more in their health and those are uselessly people who are plant-based, vegans, macrobioticists, raw foodists, and vegetarians, due, to the high fiber intake. Just don't over do it with the fiber because then your gut will lose the healthy bacteria it needs to fight off dis-eases; balance it out.

Red meat has amino acids, but, the downfall is the amount acid itself from that meat. Red meat is highly acidic and it will turn your blood acidic when too much in consumed in the long run. Let us not forget the high fat content that starts to clog the arteries when too much is consumed and increase your cholesterol levels.  Eggs too have amino acids in them, but, too many eggs will trigger off high cholesterol also. Yes, there are "good"and bad," but, can you see my points on the subject itself? You want the blood to be and stay alkaline which keeps it dis-ease free so that your blood cells can form the way they need to build and fight off dis-eases. By eating more foods that are high and rich in antioxidants and anti inflammatory that are super foods which are high in alkaline; one can achieve that. It is all about the blood people and once you keep that blood strong that is alkalized you will see the rewards in your health.  Your food is no longer raised or grown the way it used to be. It's like every other day and week there are recalls for both plants, poultry seafoods, and meats. It is your choice in what you do.  All I can say is be and stay informed of what is going on, raise and grow your own and to choose wisely.

I enjoy using NOW FOODS brand and highly recommend them. I have been using the brand for over 5 years now and have been nothing, but, satisfied with their products in health and beauty (oils including essential oils), because I not only see the results, but, also feel them and see them. There are other brands out there that do carry the pea protein and also the green pea protein. Below I've left some links for you to venture into that can help you. I suggest that you do your own researching and speak to your health provider, a holistic nutritionist, or dietitian also.

Raw Coconut Lime Cilantro Dressing

The mighty coconut has over 300 uses and is an epic super food for overall health. Raw coconut milk is dairy free and a great substitute for vegans, vegetarians, and raw foodists for meals that need a plant-based dairy or cream . This creamy liquid is made from the pressing of  the plant-based white flesh, of the coconut. It has a slightly sweet taste, it aids in digestion. It has healthy high saturated fats which helps metabolize the body. It contains lauric acid that is found in mother's milk. Lauric acid lowers cholesterol levels, antibacterial, and it is also an antiviral. Once opened, coconut milk must be refrigerated or else it will spoil and it should not stay past 3-4 days when stored in the refrigerator. However, it can be frozen much longer, but, no longer than 2-3 weeks.

Coconut milk contains vitamins, C, E,  which helps boosts the immune system. The vitamin E is an antioxidant and fat soluble, which helps protects the body's tissue from free radicals. It also contains vitamin B, that aids the body in processing energy from the foods that you consume and also help builds red blood cells; regenerates it. Coconut milk also has phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, and iron. It also is an antioxidant, which allows the cells to, "breathe (oxygenates)," that reverses the aging process. The fats in the coconut milk are not stored in the body, due to the monoglycerides that are lipids. These fatty acids monoesters of glycerol is a great defense against clogging of the arteries that prevents heart disease and stroke. Coconut milk is also an anti carcinogen (cancer fighter), and an anti inflammatory. It helps regulate your blood sugar, calm your nerves, strengthen your bones and relieves arthritis.

Cilantro is also known as Coriander leaves. This super food, not only detoxifies the body of metals, such as: mercury, lead, aluminum and other metals, but, it also gives you radiant skin and flushes the kidneys of any harmful toxins. It has plant derived chemical compounds that prevents dis-eases and promotes overall health.

Avocados not only promotes cardiovascular health, that has monounsaturated fats, but, it is an anti inflammatory also. It aids in arthritis, both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid. It is an anti carcinogen and promotes blood sugar regulations. It also, gives the skin a natural glow. It provides carotenoid antioxidants such as: alpha carotene, beta carotene, lutein, neochrome, neoxanthin, beta cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin, chrysanthemaxanthin, violaxanthin that are all an optimal absorption of fat solubles; within this phytonutrients combination. Avocados enhances your body's ability to absorb nutrients, that's why it is excellent for weight management and diabetes.

As a reminder, super foods work from the inside out. You are what you eat in 28 days, so, choose wisely. This information is for educational purposes; always, consult your health practitioner to guide you. Please keep in mind to be organic as much as possible; preferably all organic for optimum nutrition. I will add, shop at Farmer's markets also for better prices. Check your city, town, village, or state for markets in your area.

Ingredients:

1 cup fresh cilantro
1/2 cup coconut milk
1/2 medium ripe avocado, peel and cut into cubes
1/4 cup plus 1 tbsp lime, juiced
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/2 tsp tarragon leaves, ground, dried or fresh
1/2 tsp cumin, ground
1 1/2 tbsp sweetener, agave nectar used
1 garlic clove, large
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
1/4 tsp fine pink Himalayan salt, (no more than 1/2 tsp)
Rinse and soaked all vegetables thoroughly. Organic fresh vegetables are used in all recipes. I rinse, soak, and cook all of my meals in Kangen water, which is alkaline water; that has a 9.5pH (soaked for 15 minutes).

Preparation:

Combine all ingredients in blender and mix well until smooth. Store in mason jar 3-4 days in refrigerator.

This dressing can be used as a dip with baked tortilla chips, salads, sandwiches, burgers, wraps, or whatever your taste desires.

Note: This dressing can be thinned out by adding 2 tbsp of alkaline water or coconut milk. My taste testers approved this at the slight thick consistency it already has with the ingredient measurements stated in recipe above that did not want it any thinner; the choice is yours.

Makes 2 cups (16 oz)

Ingredients:

4 1/2- 5 cups Brussels sprouts whole, cut in half rinse and drain
3 cups coconut milk
1 pkg baby Bella mushrooms (brown Portobello mushrooms), slice
1 cup vegan Parmesan cheese, to make vegetarian, use dairy version
1 cup white onion, chop medium
4 garlic cloves, shred
2 fresh basil leaves, chop fine
2 thyme sprigs, whole
2/3 cup tomato, chop
1/2 cup scallions, chop
1/2 red bell pepper, medium julienne
1/2 green bell pepper, medium julienne
3 tbsp raw coconut aminos Coconut Secret, or, 3 tbsp low sodium Tamari sauce
2 tbsp grapeseed oil
1 tbsp plus 1 tsp sodium free complete seasoning
1 tbsp fresh squeeze lemon
3/4 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp arrow root or cornstarch, used arrow root
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
1 inch fresh ginger, shred
dash off fine pink Himalayan salt (optional)

As always, be organic as much as possible; preferably all organic.

Photo: Ta'llah Saadiq Nehru

Supplies:

1 large skillet or large pot with lid
1 cutting board
1 large spoon or wooden tip spatula, used in stir fry's
1 knife
1 small hand grater
1 set measuring spoons
2 measuring cups
1 large bowl for Brussels sprouts
1 medium bowl for mushroom
small bowls for chops vegetables

Method:

1. Soak, clean, and rinse all vegetables thoroughly.
2. Turn range on medium heat. Allow pan or pot to heat up in 2 minutes, place oil into pan and allow it to heat up for minute or so.
3. Add in chop onion and allow to simmer for another 1 minute. Add in shredded garlic and cook for 30 seconds while, stirring occasionally.

4. Turn heat down one notch. Stir in coconut milk, thyme, basil, black pepper, turmeric, tomato, complete seasoning, arrowroot/cornstarch, lemon. coconut aminos/Tamari sauce.

Brussels sprouts sauteing in cream sauce

5. Place Brussels sprouts halves face down on flat side of vegetables in pan to simmer into liquid mixture, cover with lid; for 3 minutes.

6. Turn heat down one notch. Gently stir in sliced mushrooms. You want to flip the Brussels sprouts/mushroom mixture more than stir them because of the leaves that may come off in the process. Simmer while flipping vegetables occasionally for 2 minutes. Mix in scallions, red, and green bell peppers. Turn heat off right after and remove from that specific burner.

Photo: Ta'llah Saadiq Nehru

7. Cover the pan/pot with lid half way to have a balanced amount of remaining heat, that will slightly cook, the remaining vegetables to a point that it is not soggy, but, still has a crunch to it. As a reminder, food still cooks when the heat if off and it is either on  or off the initial burner being used.
Photo: Ta'llah Saadiq Nehru

Note: I highly suggest the use of the aminos instead of the Tamari sauce. Coconut aminos has the least amount of sodium in these types of sauces that are known to be high in sodium. The dash of salt is still there if you feel if it is needed to add into the meal. Or instead of the salt you can add in 1 tsp more of aminos/Tamari sauce instead. Do not over do it. This meal is even more flavorful once vegetables have marinated into sauce mixture of time that's why it is suggested to allow the final product of this dish, to sit in the pan/pot for at least 5 minutes after the scallions and bell peppers have been added in.  Store remainder of vegetable mixture in tight a lid storage container; good for up to 3 days.

 Suggestion:

My recipes are extremely versatile. You can add in chicken breast (grilled is suggested also), beef, or shrimp, into this; by just seasoning the one you have chosen with a slight mixture of salt or a seasoning that is light enough and is low sodium. The goal is not to change the taste of this food too much, but, to give it its own flavoring through the choice of suggestion used. The choice of meat or poultry should be cook FIRST into the onion and garlic mixture stated above. If you choose shrimp, it can go in within the last 7 minutes depending on the size chosen. Tip: Jumbo shrimp take about 7 to 8 minutes, large shrimp take about 5 to 7 minutes, and medium size are done in about 3 to 4 minutes. Then add in the rest of the ingredients after as mentioned above. This dish can be served with brown Basmati rice, Jasmine rice, quinoa, Teff (Ethiopian grain), fettuccine, or your favorite pasta, and also, as a side dish.

Organic superfoods, and alkaline plant-based cooking is my specialty. That I been doing for over 5 years now. As always, with ALL of my recipes, be organic as much as possible because I know the "struggle," is real, but, preferably just be organic if you can; as I am.    There will be more to come in the near future from me; that I will be writing on food and spirituality. I have been a writer for over a year in the past for a online magazine that went global; which I left, to pursue my ventures. Great thing is I have also received some offers for books prior to me leaving that platform. My 16 year old Sun, Ta'llah, is my photographer and we are a family based team in this. Stay tuned, for what I have to release and unleash unto this planet by getting to know my work, what is to come, and what I am truly about as a melanin enriched, Organic Being.

I cook with superfoods and with a 9.5 pH Kangen water (alkaline water) from our Kangen water machine by Enagic; which I am a distributor of also. My goal is to re-educate you into better and over all wellness of your entire Being.

I will be blogging many of my recipes that have already been in that magazine for you all to have as a thank you to all who have supported me in this venture as a "jump off," for my cookbook that I have been working on diligently; stay tuned. Just about every Monday I do a meatless Monday on my Facebook page, "Each One Teach One," to help others out in their plant based venture which is a lifestyle not a diet. My goat is to show you as a guide that you can and should incorporate more plants into your daily intake to aid in your overall health. I am not here to convert anyone, for the choice is your in the end with anything you do in your life as your,"choice of free will;"bestowed unto by the Creator.

I have come to learn that many of your local family grocers do carry organic foods from local farmers. The fact is many of these farmers cannot afford to be certified with the larger companies such as The GMO Project; it is expensive. However, now there is a label, "Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) a non profit organization," that helps to small business farmers that I encourage you to get the word out to these local farmers, and local grocers to help in this food movement of eating real foods that are now labeled as "organic," and not GMO.

Here's a tip when purchasing organic foods. Make sure to read your labels. Turn that package or product around and look for a third party certifier. Please do not purchase products that only says USDA. The USDA is known to be in the pockets of companies who use GMO in their foods and plant production. Tehre are several companies out here that are third party certifiers that I do speak about and have given a list of on my Facebook page and also on my blog.

Note: Make sure to read up on the Astragalus on my blog, before you consume it. Also, speak to a health provider to see if it is right for you and that you do not have any allergies to this plant; more reasons why I gave you options as alternatives. Within this recipe the sweetener is optional; however, I did use it and my choice was the agave nectar this time around. Coconut nectar is great for diabetics it has low glycemic levels. It is one of the most healthiest organic sweetener out here that is fill with nutrition from that might coconut; which has over 300 uses (coconuts). Get to know about and use the mighty coconut and you will see what I am saying.

Astragalus

Image via: Herbal Extract Plus

Astragalus has been used in Traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds of years and it is still being used in this current day. Astragalus membranaceus plant (Astragalus Huáng Qí), is in the, legume, Fabaceae, and Faboideae family. The Fabaceae also known as Leguminose, that are quite large and economically important to flowering plants; they commonly known as the legumes, beans, and pea family. The legume family is the largest of the flowering plants. Fabaceae are mostly herbs, however, it includes shrubs and trees that grows in both temperate and tropical climates. Faboideae is the subfamily of this plant and Astragalus has a large genus of about  3000 species of herbs and shrubs. Some of these species  of Astragalus have the toxin swainsonine that is poisonous and is harmful to livestock. I will add, that swainsonine is also used in some chemotherapy drugs. Make sure to check if you are on chemotherapy, they affects maybe different than it is in animals; so check with your health provider. My advice is to look into a more holistic approach that heals; minus all of the side effects that chemotherapy has because there are PLENTY of other options.

Astragalus root: Image via: Aliexpress
Photo: Ta'llah Saadiq Nehru: Organic Astragalus root powder
The Astragalus plant is known as a protector, a shield for the immune system, and for the overall wellness of your health. It strengthens the immune system as it forms a defense mechanism against pernicious threats; so, it is excellent for those with HIV/AIDS, cancer, herpes, or can be used as preventive medicine for those dis-eases, with guidance from a certified practicing Holistic or Naturopathic practitioner.

This plant is great also for stress; taking this herb will aid your body to adapt to it. Stress destroys the immune and nervous systems which causes the blood to inflame. The depth of the immune function of this herb helps it promote normal healthy levels of specific cells and tissue function. This plant is not only an anti-oxidant, but also, an anti-inflammatory; so it will give the cells the oxygen that it needs to regenerate properly. It is also great for the liver (a tonic is usually made for the liver), spleen, kidneys, kidney dis-ease, allergies, common cold, upper respiratory infections, asthma, chronic fatigue, mood, stamina/endurance (athletic performance), diabetes, chest pain (angina), heart dis-ease/heart failure, high blood pressure, anemia, blood disorders (Hepatitis B), hearing loss (sudden due to loud noises or deafness), menopausal symptoms, and fibromyalgia. This herb can also be applied onto to skin which it will increase the circulation in the area that it is needed in and it will to speed up a wound in its healing process when it is applied the area of that wound.

Astragalus with a combination of other herbs can help to treat breast, lung, and cervical cancer when taken orally.

Side effects of this herb is not really known, but, it is advised for pregnant women and women who are breast feeding, not to ingest, it may be toxic to the fetus/newborn. Also, for those with auto immune dis-eases such as lupus (SLE systemic lupus erythematosus), Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), muscular sclerosis (MS) to avoid Astragalus because it may just increase and worsen these
conditions.

If you are to purchase this herb in an extract, make sure you read to see if it is organic and alcohol free. It will state it right on the top part on the front part of the labeling on the bottle. If it doesn't, then you know it has alcohol in it; which is normal in the process of extracts. It is the simple fact, that many do not want the alcohol version of extracts and they are given this option by the manufacturer.

This herb can be mixed with organic licorice root, Ashwagandha root, wild oats, holy basil, ginseng, Ligustrum lucidum, Chinese skullcap, Reishi mushrooms, Maitake mushrooms, burdock root, black cohosh, red raspberry leaves, Buplerum; this is not a complete list of herbs, research and questioning is still needed on your end. If you are to drink it in a herbal blend it is 1 tsp of the root, leaves, or flowers to one cup of water; preferably alkaline water that is higher than a 7.0 pH, but, no higher than a 11 pH. That is when the water goes back to being acidic that causes inflammation in the blood due to the lack of alkaline (antioxidant/anti-inflammatory), that oxygenates the cells that helps regenerate them instead of them degenerating (free radicals), by attacking each other. The more measurement of herbs by the teaspoon that you add; the more you must increase the liquid to one cup per each teaspoon being used for the other herbs. The Astragalus powder can be sprinkled in to soups, smoothies, and juices also. 1 tsp to 1 cup of liquids. This herb can also be taken in supplement form also just make sure that if you are in a plant based life style such as myself that the castings around that pill is not made with glycerin/gelatin  that has animal fat in it; the pig to be exact You want a vegetable glycerin/gelatin instead that is plant based; so make sure to read the label on the back of the product. If you are going to take this herb, do not self medicate with any other root without the proper knowledge, training, and guidance from a trained professional. The above dosage is to give you an idea ONLY of what is needed.

As a reminder, if you are on prescription medications; you must NEVER mix herbs with it. Most doctors will inform you to wait 3-4 hours before or after your prescription medication, but, here's the thing, sometimes that pharmaceutical mediation will interact with herbs in such a dangerous way that it can harm you and even take your life. So please be wise and not the fool when it comes to your health and seek the proper care from a certified health professional.

I live by the motto, "prevention before cure!" Cheers to optimum health and healthy living! Hotep!
